Gen1 (Legacy) and recommended Gen2 (Current) SMPS VITA 67.3 part numbers

SV Microwave recently launched our SMPS VITA 67.3 Gen2 product line. This is the next evolution of our high-performance RF interconnects for embedded computing systems.

This update improved the alignment of connectors within modules and reliability, ensuring ease of integration across all port configurations.

Below, we clarify the transition to the revised PNs and discuss the limitations of the legacy designs. Please note that all legacy hardware meets the VITA 67.3 spec.

History

In 2019, the demand for higher-density solutions drove the implementation of SMPS into the VITA 67.3 standard. The primary focus was to minimize the contact port-to-port spacing. This allowed contacts to be placed anywhere in the module envelope.

In 2021, SOSA standardized the 19-position modules. This standardization did not require the absolute minimum port-to-port spacing.

SV used this opportunity to enhance the SMPS interface within the VPX ecosystem. We optimized the design based on current system criteria while maintaining backwards compatibility.

Changes

The changes made in 2025 allow for more capture of the mating interfaces, as well as improved alignment of the backplane contact in its neutral position prior to mating

Total scope of changes made to the plug-in modules and connectors

  • Plug-In Module

      • PCB mounting features remain the same
      • Contact cavity geometry was modified to accept the larger SMPS Gen2 Contacts

  • Plug-In Contact

      • Contact was embiggened to provide more scoop/capture of the mating interface

  • Backplane Module

      • PCB mounting features remain the same
      • Counterbore was added to the contact captivation geometry to increase alignment

  • Backplane Contact

    • Minor enhancements made to the interface per MIL-STD-347 and contact captivation geometry
    • SMPS Gen1 and SMPS Gen2 backplane contacts fit in either the SMPS Gen1 or SMPS Gen2 backplane modules

Compatibility and Why to Use Gen2

Gen1 parts comply with VITA 67.3, are in fielded systems, and will continue to be supported as a legacy product. However, they are no longer recommended for new designs due to Gen2’s improved compatibility across all port locations, enhanced mechanical fit and port tolerance, and continued backwards compatibility with previous SMPS designs.
