SV Microwave’s Solderless PCB Connectors

May 28, 2026

Traditional RF PCB connectors require the use of solder to affix to a PCB. This can come with challenges such as a complex installation that requires trained technicians and special equipment, being hard to rework, and being unable to be reused from design to design.

That’s why SV Microwave provides a complete line of solderless PCB connectors that address many of the problems associated with soldered connectors and solder work. They provide simple installation with just screws and a driver, easy adjustment on the PCB, and are reusable and easily replaceable.

Variations and Benefits of Solderless PCB Connectors

SV Solderless Connectors Benefits

Applications

  • Test & Instrumentation
  • Prototyping
  • Research & Development

SV provides a wide variety of solderless connectors in a multitude of styles. These fall into two main categories: surface-mount connectors and edge-launch connectors.

Surface-Mount Connectors

Surface-mount connectors are mated to the PCB's planar surface and can be mounted anywhere on the board. They transition to either a CPW/Microstrip or Stripline signal path.

SV offers solderless surface-mount connectors in two styles: standard compression mount connectors and our LiteTouch PCB connectors.

Standard Compression Mount Connectors

Our standard compression-mount connectors feature a robust mechanical design and strong RF performance. These provide a cost-effective solution for a variety of PCB applications and work especially well with thicker, harder PCB materials.

LiteTouch

LiteTouch Connectors

SV created the LiteTouch line to address issues often caused by compression-mount connectors when fixturing to soft, high-frequency dielectric materials. Standard compression mounts have a fixed center pin that can cause trace deformation damage, creating unwanted impedance changes in the launch geometry. This can negatively affect RF performance on more sensitive materials. Thin-substrate materials with a thickness of less than 10 mil are most vulnerable to this issue.

Our LiteTouch solderless connectors use a pogo pin design that retracts the contact into the connector housing to prevent damage to the PCB. This keeps VSWR stable at higher frequencies. These connectors are available in both non-magnetic and stainless steel finishes.

Edge-Launch Connectors

Edge-Launch Connectors

Edge-launch connectors are named for their location on the board, as they are mounted to the edge of the PCB. The transmission line of an edge-launch connector is colinear with the axis of the PCB trace. The direct signal usually means it can operate at higher RF frequencies than a surface-mount connector, without unwanted modes affecting RF performance. This is because the transmission path on a surface-mount connector has an abrupt transition from the connector to the board at a right angle.

SV offers a variety of solderless edge-launch connector styles, including conventional, reduced flange, and low profile. Normally, a conventional connector is used for a robust connection to the board, while the reduced flange and low profile are ideal for applications with tight envelopes.

30° Solderless PCB Compression Mount Connectors

30° Solderless PCB Compression Mount Connectors

While SV supplies a wide variety of edge-launch and surface-mount solderless connectors, we have also recently launched our 30° Solderless PCB Compression Mount Connectors. These feature a brand-new body orientation angled 30° away from the board. Thoughtfully designed to improve electrical performance over standard surface-mount PCB connectors, they operate at 65 GHz. As mentioned above, edge launch connectors are usually able to operate at higher frequencies than surface mount connectors because of the direct signal. However, this comes with its own challenges, as you are limited to placement along the board edges.

The 30-degree solderless connectors can be positioned anywhere on the board and achieve Edge Launch-like performance, minimizing lossy PCB-based transmission and enhancing RF performance.
